Johandi du Plessis
Johandi du Plessis is a South African artist-researcher and teacher based in Bloemfontein in the Free State province. She received her BA in Fine Arts from the University of the Free State in 2014 and is currently in the final stages towards completing her MA in Fine Arts at the same institution. She further teaches at her alma mater across and between the mediums of drawing, painting, sculpture and installation, and digital-based art.
Drawing from her interest in the social life of images – how images move and shapeshift among diverse and surprising contexts, objects and places – Du Plessis explores the ways in which social imaginaries change, intersect and transform in new political, social and other contexts, and how this is often revealed, shaped, contained and catalyzed through images and pictures. In her art practice, Du Plessis dabbles across mediums, such as artist’s books, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, digital-based mediums, and popular image forms like GIFs.
